Russian overnight drone and missile attacks on Ukraine have left four people dead and about 20 others injured across Kyiv and several regions, Ukrainian authorities confirmed on Saturday.
The deadly assault, which hit the capital and multiple towns, comes as Kyiv’s Western allies intensify pressure on Moscow, with the war now entering its fourth winter.
According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, one rescue worker was killed and another injured after a second missile strike targeted the Petropavlivska community in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
The ministry added that a woman was killed and seven others wounded in the eastern region during the strikes, which also damaged residential buildings, fire trucks, and shops.
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that two people died and 12 others sustained injuries following multiple explosions in the capital.
AFP reporters in Kyiv said they heard the distinctive whirring of missiles and powerful blasts around 4:00 a.m. local time (01:00 GMT). Emergency services later shared images of firefighters battling large flames as blazes erupted in the Desnyansky and Darnytsky districts.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia had launched nine Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 62 attack drones during the overnight barrage, noting that four ballistic missiles and 50 drones were intercepted and destroyed.
Meanwhile, the United States and the European Union have announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector this week, aimed at crippling Moscow’s war economy and reducing its capacity to sustain prolonged hostilities.
The ongoing conflict, which began in February 2022, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions, with no sign of a diplomatic resolution in sight.
