Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has disclosed that over 200 cases of dog bites were recorded across the state in 2024.

Speaking during the launch of the 2025 Annual Livestock Vaccination Campaign in Itas-Gadau Local Government Area, the governor revealed that the state government had procured 10,000 doses of anti-rabies vaccines to combat the disease.

According to the Daily Post, Mohammed noted that dog bite cases were reported in several local government areas last year, with 23 cases confirmed to be rabies.

“Considering the deadly nature of rabies which is a zoonotic disease transmitted through dog bites by unvaccinated dogs, the state government has purchased 10,000 doses of anti-rabies vaccines and distributed them to all the veterinary clinics across the 20 local government areas to curb the escalation of the disease,” he said.

He urged dog owners, whether keeping them as pets, for hunting, or for security, to ensure their animals are vaccinated at the nearest veterinary clinic, where the service is offered free of charge.

The governor also disclosed that N8.9 million had been allocated for the 2025 Annual Livestock Vaccination Campaign.

He explained that the vaccination initiative had been prioritised to tackle livestock diseases, with N80.9 million set aside for the biannual campaign, including an initial release of N40 million.

“For this round of vaccination campaign, the total of 1 million herds of cattle, 500 sheep and goats, as well as 500 poultry are targeted to be vaccinated across the state,” the governor added.
