An Edo State High Court has issued an injunction preventing the state government from suspending 18 local government chairmen and their deputies from carrying out their official duties.
The chairmen had been suspended by the Edo State House of Assembly on December 16, 2024. In response, the 18 local council leaders filed a lawsuit seeking to block the suspension, arguing that it was unlawful. They requested the court to issue an order preventing the implementation of the suspension.
In his ruling on Suit No B/307/OS/24, Hon. Justice Efe sided with the chairmen, granting their request for an injunction. The court directed the Edo State government not to enforce the suspension resolution until the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice, which was filed on December 12, 2024.
“The Defendant, through their agents, servants, or any other parties, are hereby restrained from enforcing or acting on the suspension resolution passed by the Edo State House of Assembly on December 16, 2024, or any subsequent resolutions, pending the hearing of the Motion on Notice,” Justice Efe ruled.
The case has been adjourned to February 17, 2025, for further proceedings.
The newly elected governor, Monday Okpebholo, had accused the local government officials of misconduct, which led to their suspension.
