The National Youth Committee of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, demanding a public retraction and apology over alleged defamatory remarks made against the Force Public Relations Officer (FPPRO), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, and signed by the committee’s National Coordinator, Engr. Junaid Olatunji Victor, the PCRC youth wing described Sowore’s allegations as false, reckless, and aimed at undermining public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
The group was reacting to claims made by Sowore during a recent protest at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he, alongside some retired police officers, reportedly accused ACP Adejobi of being involved in the alleged disappearance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) eyeglasses.
“These allegations are entirely baseless, malicious, and lack any factual foundation,” the statement read. “They not only seek to impugn the character of a disciplined and highly respected officer, but also attempt to demoralise police personnel and erode public confidence in our security institutions.”
The PCRC warned that failure to comply with the seven-day ultimatum would compel it to take further action, including “exposing individuals and foreign interests allegedly sponsoring Mr. Sowore’s actions, whose ultimate aim appears to be the destabilisation of Nigeria’s security framework.”
The statement added that Sowore must retract his comments through the same media channels used in making the allegations and tender an unreserved public apology to ACP Adejobi.
Describing the allegations as “irresponsible and unbecoming,” the committee reaffirmed its support for the Nigeria Police Force and expressed its continued commitment to strengthening police-community relations.
“The PCRC will not stand by while deliberate attempts are made to discredit the integrity of law enforcement officers. We remain committed to upholding professionalism, integrity, and mutual trust between the police and the communities they serve,” it stated.
