New Army Chief Vows Aggressive Offensive Against Insecurity

Nigeria’s newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waheedi Shaibu, has assumed office with a firm commitment to intensify the fight against insecurity and restore confidence in the nation’s armed forces.

Speaking during a brief handover ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, Shaibu declared that the worsening security situation — which has displaced communities and crippled local economies — would receive immediate and decisive attention.

“We are in challenging times,” he said. “Law-abiding citizens across parts of the country are going through fear, hardship and displacement. This is unacceptable and demands urgent military response.”

Shaibu promised to review ongoing operations and adopt fresh strategies to counter terrorism, banditry and other threats confronting the nation.

He pledged unwavering loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, assuring that the Nigerian Army under his command would not fail in its constitutional duty to protect lives and territory.
The new army chief commended his predecessor for improvements in logistics, infrastructure and troop welfare over the past year, vowing to consolidate and build on those gains.

He also pledged to deepen professionalism, strengthen coordination with other security agencies, and boost troop morale, especially in frontline areas.
“I have been a part of this battle and I deeply understand the sacrifices made by our officers and soldiers. We will continue to support them,” he said.

Shaibu paid tribute to fallen military personnel and observed a minute of silence in their honour, promising sustained support for their families.
“It is a new dawn,” he added. “We have a duty to the nation, and we will not disappoint.”
