Senate President Godswill Akpabio has claimed that Nigeria was on “life support” economically when President Bola Tinubu assumed office, attributing the dire situation to the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Politics Nigeria, speaking during the 2024 Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme in Ikot Ekpene, Akpabio revealed that Tinubu himself acknowledged the severity of the challenges inherited from his predecessor. According to Akpabio, Tinubu admitted the country’s economic crisis was far worse than expected.
Despite the difficulties, Akpabio expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms, describing them as painful but essential for Nigeria’s long-term recovery. He urged Nigerians, especially those in Akwa Ibom, to remain patient and supportive as the government works to stabilize the economy.
Akpabio also addressed beneficiaries of his empowerment programme, advising them to use the tools and resources provided to improve their livelihoods instead of selling them for immediate gain.
The Senate President, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, served as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs under Buhari’s administration. Now, as a key figure in Tinubu’s government, Akpabio is advocating for the reforms needed to tackle the economic challenges left behind.
