The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended the two-week warning strike it declared last week across all public universities in the country.
The decision to suspend the industrial action was announced on Wednesday during a press conference held at the union’s national headquarters in Abuja.
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, who addressed journalists at the briefing, said the decision followed the intervention of the Senate and other well-meaning Nigerians who waded into the matter.
He explained that after extensive deliberations, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union resolved to give the Federal Government a one-month window to address all outstanding issues in contention.
According to Piwuna, the union’s decision was taken in the interest of the students and the public university system, but warned that failure of the government to act within the given timeframe might force ASUU to resume its suspended strike.
