The African Action Congress (AAC) has strongly criticised Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, over the worsening security situation in the state, following the killing of over 20 residents of Ilu-Abo in a suspected herdsmen attack.
The attack, which has sparked widespread condemnation, prompted residents of the affected community to stage a protest at the Ondo State Government House on Tuesday, demanding immediate intervention from the state government.
In a statement issued by its former gubernatorial candidate, Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, the AAC accused the Aiyedatiwa-led administration of lacking the competence and political will to safeguard lives and property.
Ajayi decried what he described as the government’s failure to respond decisively to the recurrent violence across the state, particularly in Akoko, Owo, Akure, and Ondo South.
“The escalating insecurity in Ondo State is a clear indication of an administration that is both incapacitated and unaccountable,” Ajayi stated.
“It is disheartening that while Ilu-Abo has risen in protest against these heinous killings, other communities remain silent despite facing similar threats.”
Ajayi further criticised what he termed the government’s lack of ideological clarity and strategic direction in governance, warning that the insecurity in Ilu-Abo could escalate across the state if urgent measures are not taken.
“The solution lies in a governance model that prioritises collective security and the welfare of citizens over mismanagement and individualistic leadership,” he added.
Extending his condolences to the people of Ilu-Abo, Ajayi expressed optimism that the state would overcome its security challenges, urging residents to demand accountability from their leaders.
As of the time of this report, the Ondo State Government is yet to respond to the concerns raised by the AAC and protesting residents.
