Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-political group, has asked President Bola Tinubu to suspend the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, following fresh allegations of corruption linked to his office.
The request comes after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly arrested and questioned Torhile Uchi, a senior aide working directly under Akume.
The group said that the investigation is not moving forward because Akume is allegedly trying to protect himself by influencing the process.
Afenifere wants Tinubu to take firm action by removing Akume from his position while the case is still under review.
They argued that this will allow investigators to work freely without fear of interference.
According to the group, the allegations involve an ₦80 billion money laundering operation that reportedly connects both Akume and his aide.
Afenifere insisted that allowing Akume to remain in office while such a serious issue is under investigation sends the wrong message, especially at a time when the government has promised to tackle corruption with full force.
The group has also given the EFCC seven days to give the public an update on how far they have gone with the case.
If the agency fails to do so, Afenifere says it will lead mass protests across the country, starting from the Yoruba region and involving people who want to see real action taken against public theft.
They warned that the current case is much larger than the one involving former SGF Babachir Lawal, which made headlines in the past.
Afenifere said this is an opportunity for the EFCC to prove it still has the power to act on corruption matters and not just make noise without real results.
While the group still supports the current government and its plans to clean up the system, it has urged the President to show Nigerians that no one is above the law.
Afenifere said ignoring this issue would damage the public’s trust and make it look like the fight against corruption is only for certain people.
