Eight female inmates, including two pregnant women and two nursing mothers, were released from the Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre after Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf paid off their fines and compensation costs.
The release happened during the governor’s surprise visit to the facility, where he also inspected the general condition of the inmates and discussed ways to improve their well-being.
The visit revealed that out of 1,939 inmates in the facility, only 382 had been sentenced, while over 1,500 were still awaiting trial.
Governor Yusuf promised to work closely with the Judiciary to speed up the handling of cases to reduce the number of people held without judgment.
He said his government would continue supporting those behind bars for minor offenses, especially by securing their release in phases.
While addressing the inmates, the governor told them to stay hopeful and see their time in prison as temporary.
He encouraged them to think about making better choices when they return to society.
To improve their comfort, he ordered that food, cows, mattresses, blankets, and drinks be provided immediately.
Governor Yusuf also visited the Janguza Maximum Security Correctional Facility.
He said inmates from Kurmawa Correctional Centre would be moved there because of its better structure.
He praised the layout and condition of the facility and thanked retired General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau for helping to set it up.
During the visit, the governor spoke to young inmates, urging them to learn from their past and make good use of the second chance they would receive.
He also mentioned that his government would continue to help inmates further their education and learn useful skills for life outside prison.
Many of the inmates expressed thanks for the governor’s visit and his support towards improving their lives in custody.
