The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a series of projects scheduled for inauguration in May as part of the celebrations marking President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office.
During an inspection tour of various ongoing projects in Abuja on Thursday, Wike highlighted the rehabilitation of the Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC) as one of the key projects nearing completion. He stated that the facility, being renovated by Julius Berger, would be restored to a world-class standard.
According to the minister, the revamped centre would host significant events but with a stronger focus on proper maintenance.
“In the past, it was leased to a senator who made money from it while neglecting its upkeep. This time, we will establish a maintenance contract with Julius Berger to ensure it remains in top condition,” Wike said.
He also revealed that two interchanges on Wole Soyinka Way—one at Murtala Mohammed Way and another at Shehu Shagari Way—would be ready for commissioning in May. The projects, being executed by Gilmor, aim to improve connectivity between Jahi, Jabi, Mabushi, and Utako Districts, as well as provide a link to the FCT Division of the Court of Appeal.
Another major infrastructure upgrade set for commissioning is the ₦16 billion interchange at NICON Junction, designed to facilitate movement between Maitama and Katampe Districts through Gishiri village and Wole Soyinka Way.
“All the connecting roads leading to the Judges’ Quarters are also on track. The contractor has assured us that they will be completed before May,” he added.
Wike further disclosed that projects in satellite towns would also be inaugurated, including the A2-Pai rural roads in Kwali Area Council, the Aguma Palace Road in Gwagwalada, and the dualisation of the Ushafa-Military Checkpoint Road in Bwari Area Council.
Additionally, he mentioned the service lane from Apo Interchange to Wassa, currently being handled by CGC, as another important project nearing completion.
On the issue of funding, Wike reassured that the projects are covered under the 2024 budget, which remains active until June. He also confirmed that the 2025 budget proposal had been submitted to President Tinubu and would soon be presented to the National Assembly for approval.
“Once the 2025 budget is passed, there will be no financial constraints,” Wike concluded.
