Why explosion rocks Akure – Ondo Police Command gives reasons

The explosion that occurred along Akure-Owo expressway, a few kilometres from the Akure metropolis was caused by  a truck legally conveying a consignment of explosive materials to a quarry company in Edo State, Starnews NG has gathered.


Addressing newsmen on Saturday, the Ondo State Police command, through the commissioner of Police, said the explosives were duly escorted by Men of the Police Ordinance department but that unfortunately, the vehicle conveying the explosives developed a fault and they tried to move away from residential areas to address the fault. 


According to him, they noticed smoke was coming out from the vehicle’s engine which later resulted to fire which consequently caused the explosion at the airport junction, Akure, Ondo State Capital.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Saturday.

Starnews NG learnt that the security personnel ran away from the scene the moment the accident became uncontrollable.


Luckily, the school and the church in the area were not in session because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, Starnews can report.

Though properties worth over 100 were destroyed and many people injured but no death recorded.

    Legally conveying a consignment of explosive.

    Since the police is aware of the consignment, the government should take charge of responsibility to pay for damages and compensation
