Visa Overstayers to Pay $15 Daily from August in Nigeria

The Nigerian government has announced that from August 2025, anyone who stays beyond their visa duration will pay a daily fine of $15.

This rule is part of the new Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 and aims to discourage people from remaining in the country after their visas expire.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, shared the information during a gathering in Lagos attended by officials from the Nigeria Immigration Service, representatives from foreign missions, and others in the travel and immigration business.

He revealed that although the policy takes effect in May, there will be a grace period until August.

During this time, overstayers won’t be fined, giving them a chance to adjust to the new rule.

According to the policy, the fine will be calculated for each extra day a visitor remains in the country.

Those who stay beyond three months may face a ban from entering Nigeria for five years, and anyone who overstays for a year or more risks being banned for ten years.

The Nigeria Immigration Service will be in charge of enforcing these penalties.

The updated visa policy is also introducing digital improvements. From now on, visa applicants can complete the process online, monitor their applications, and get approvals electronically.

This is part of ongoing changes meant to improve immigration processes and encourage proper visa use.
