Vandals have destroyed two key towers along the 330kV Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines, causing power outages in parts of Kaduna and Kano.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that the towers, identified as T133 and T136, were severely damaged, disrupting electricity supply to various areas in the North-West.
Following the collapse of the first transmission line, the TCN immediately deployed local vigilante groups to enhance patrols in the affected area. However, the second line also went offline shortly after.
TCN’s Shiroro Regional Office reported extensive damage to the cables in multiple sections of the lines. “This is not a case of routine damage but a deliberate act of vandalism,” stated TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah.
Mbah further explained that the company is working closely with security agencies to protect the site, which has been flagged as vulnerable to bandit activity, posing threats to both infrastructure and personnel.
In response to the emergency, TCN has deployed a newly acquired emergency restoration system to the location to help restore power as quickly as possible.
