UNILAG Medical Student Found Dead Amid Exam Pressure

By Charles Maduka

A 300-level medical student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), known only as Williams, has passed away shortly before the university’s exams were set to begin. The cause of his death remains unknown.

However, the Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor David Oke, suggested that Williams might have taken his own life due to exam pressure. He mentioned that some of Williams’ classmates reported seeing a cryptic message, such as “goodbye,” which was posted before he was found dead.

Professor Oke described the student’s death as shocking and said the college management would carry out an autopsy after meeting with Williams’ parents on Monday, 2nd September 2024.

He stated, “As of now, we cannot authoritatively say this is the cause of death, but there is a suspicion that it could be suicide, though no definite conclusion has been reached yet.”

The Association of Medical Students, University of Lagos (AMSUL), confirmed Williams’ death in a message on their WhatsApp group.

The message read: “Dear AMSULites, It is with great sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of a beloved AMSULite in the Genezens class. As we navigate this difficult time, we encourage everyone to keep the departed and their family in your thoughts and prayers. Please reach out to your classmates and friends, especially those in the Genezens class, and offer your support. Let’s stand together, showing compassion and care for one another during this challenging period.”
