UK rolls out updated english language tests for visa, citizenship applications

The UK Home Office has revealed updates to its approved list of Secure English Language Tests (SELT) for those applying for visas or citizenship, introducing new test formats and clearer global standards to streamline the process.

The existing LANGUAGECERT ESOL SELT 4-skills test will be replaced by two new test versions.

However, results from the previous test will remain valid for up to two years, and any unused vouchers will continue to be accepted for a year.

Test Requirements Based on Visa Type:
1. 4-Skills Test (reading, writing, listening, speaking):
• Skilled Worker Visa
• Health and Care Worker Visa
• Student Visa
• Start-up / Innovator Founder Visa
• Scale-up Worker Visa
• High-Potential Individual Visa
• Minister of Religion Visa
• Temporary Work (International Agreement Route)
2. Speaking and Listening Only:
• UK Citizenship
• Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain)
• Partner / Parent Visa
• International Sportsperson Visa
• Representative of an Overseas Business

Approved SELT Providers Include:
• Pearson
• Trinity College London
• IELTS SELT Consortium
• PSI Services (Skills for English UKVI)
• LANGUAGECERT

Test Centres in the UK:
• Pearson

• Pearson

• PSI Services (UKVI)
• LANGUAGECERT

Tests can be booked directly through the provider websites, with most appointments available within 28 days. It is essential for applicants to ensure their booking details match the identification information on their documents.

Accepted Identification Documents:
• Passport
• UK BRP or BRC
• EEA National ID (where applicable)
• Government-issued photo ID (for applicants outside the UK)

Photocopies or emergency documents are not accepted. After completing the test, candidates will receive a SELT reference number, which links the test results to their application.
