A UK court has set June 3 for the trial of Marcus Monzo, a Spanish-Brazilian man accused of murdering 14-year-old Nigerian schoolboy Daniel Anjorin in North-East London.
The trial will take place at the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, known as the Old Bailey.
Monzo, 37, was arrested following a violent knife attack in Hainault on April 30, 2024. He is accused of fatally stabbing Anjorin with two Japanese-style swords, causing severe wounds to the boy’s chest and neck as he was on his way to school.
Reports from British media, including the Daily Mail, revealed that Monzo also injured four other people during a 20-minute stabbing spree in the same area.
The suspect, who describes himself as a “mystic musician,” appeared in court on Friday and pleaded not guilty to the murder of Anjorin, as well as the attempted murder of four others: Donato Iwule, Sindy Arias, Henry Polania, and Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield. He also denied intentionally injuring police officer Inspector Moloy Campbell.
Monzo faces a total of ten charges. He admitted guilt to two counts of possession of offensive weapons—namely a katana and a tanto sword—but denied the other eight charges, which include aggravated burglary and carrying a kitchen knife without a lawful reason.
During earlier proceedings at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, it was revealed that Monzo allegedly crashed a van into a fence on Laing Close, striking pedestrian Iwule before attacking others with a sword. Anjorin was among those rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
