Two die, nine injured in Ondo auto crash

A fatal auto crash on the Afin-Okeagbe Road in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State has claimed the lives of two persons, while nine others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, involved a Toyota Sienna bus en route to Abuja. The ill-fated journey was abruptly cut short when one of the vehicle’s tyres reportedly burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle somersaulted, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and multiple injuries.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the sudden tyre burst led to the ghastly crash, which threw passengers into panic as the vehicle overturned multiple times.

Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, Mr. Ibitoye Samuel, disclosed that the bodies of the two deceased victims had been deposited at the morgue, while the nine injured passengers were quickly rushed to the Okeagbe Akoko General Hospital for urgent medical attention.

He attributed the accident to a burst tyre and loss of control, urging motorists to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance and avoid over-speeding.

“This incident underscores the importance of routine vehicle checks and adherence to traffic regulations. The FRSC continues to sensitise drivers on safe road use to reduce the alarming rate of road crashes in the country,” he stated.

The commander also advised drivers to always conduct thorough inspections of their vehicles before embarking on long journeys, stressing that many avoidable accidents occur due to negligence and disregard for safety precautions.
