Govt Urged to Create Jobs for Persons with Disabilities

A board member of the Vocational School for the Blind, John Yekini, has called on the government to create more employment opportunities for persons living with disabilities. He made the appeal in Lagos while chairing the seventh edition of the You Can Be Their Eyes Bible Quiz competition organised by the Bible Society of Nigeria for blind students.

Yekini stressed that it was not enough to train persons with visual impairment without giving them access to jobs, noting that many were eager to work and support their families. He acknowledged that the government had made progress in improving the welfare of persons with disabilities but urged for greater commitment to full implementation of the Disability Act.

He also commended the introduction of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, describing it as a step toward inclusion and equal opportunity.

Meanwhile, Federal Government College (Senior), Ijanikin, Lagos, emerged winner of the Bible quiz competition, scoring 80 points to defeat four other schools. Bethesda School for the Blind came second, while King’s College (Junior), Obalende, finished third.
