U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced strong dissatisfaction following a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump described the discussion as troubling, stating that Putin appeared determined to continue the violence. “I was very unhappy with my call with President Putin. He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people. It’s no good,” Trump said.
The president also indicated that he may be considering imposing tougher sanctions on Moscow, having previously held back over the past six months in hopes of encouraging Russia to de-escalate the conflict. “We talk about sanctions a lot,” Trump added. “He understands that it may be coming.”
On the same day, Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in what he described as a “very strategic” conversation. The call came amid growing concern in Kyiv over delays in U.S. military support.
Earlier, Zelensky confirmed that both leaders had agreed to collaborate on enhancing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. This followed a massive Russian missile and drone attack—reportedly the largest since the start of the invasion.
Trump also mentioned a separate phone discussion with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during which they talked about the possible deployment of U.S.-made Patriot missile systems to Ukraine. Although no commitment was made, Trump acknowledged that Merz believes Ukraine needs better protection.
