Pandemonium broke out on Monday morning at the popular NEPA Roundabout in Akure, the Ondo State capital, after a timber-laden truck crushed a road user to death in a fatal accident.
The incident, which occurred early hour today, involved the truck and a commercial motorcycle rider. Eyewitnesses said the truck lost control while navigating the ongoing construction area at the roundabout and rammed into the motorcycle, killing one person on the spot.
Shortly after the crash, another accident occurred at the same location, but no casualties were recorded.
The situation caused tension as passersby and residents trooped to the scene, expressing anger over what they described as the absence of traffic wardens and proper traffic control measures at the construction site.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman for the Ondo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, said only one death was recorded, dismissing claims circulating on social media that two persons died.
“Contrary to the rumours being spread, only one person died in the accident. Our officers have already taken charge of the situation,” Ayanlade said.
Residents appealed to the state government and security agencies to immediately deploy traffic personnel to the busy roundabout to prevent further accidents, especially as road construction activities continue in the area.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
