Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed two suspected foreign bandits, locally referred to as Lakurawa, during a clearance operation in Mano community, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident occurred at the Mano market, a location the assailants reportedly frequented to purchase food and supplies. Eyewitnesses said the soldiers engaged the armed men in a fierce gun duel, leaving two of them dead.
The operation was led by Major Chukuma, the officer in charge of security operations across Tangaza, Gudu, Binji, and Silame LGAs.
According to military sources, the troops recovered three rifles and five motorcycles from the criminals, while the rest of the gang fled under heavy fire into their hideouts in the Tangaza forest.
Residents of Tangaza, Gudu, and neighboring Argungu areas in Sokoto and Kebbi States have long suffered raids by the Lakurawa, who often take advantage of the porous border with Niger Republic to carry out attacks and retreat across the frontier.
Military authorities assured that clearance operations will continue until the bandits’ hideouts are dismantled and peace is restored in the border communities.
