No fewer than nine persons have lost their lives in a fatal road accident involving a speeding trailer and a Sharon bus along the Kaltungo–Cham Road in Kaluwa community, Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Gombe State, Samson Kaura, disclosed the incident in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, saying that 18 people were involved in the crash.
According to him, five persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four others escaped unhurt.
Kaura said the injured victims were rushed to the General Hospital in Kaltungo for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC revealed that the accident was caused by excessive speed and brake failure.
“The crash, which occurred at about 8:33 a.m., involved a trailer and a Sharon bus. The trailer was speeding on a sloping section of the road, lost control, and rammed into the bus from behind, causing it to somersault,” Kaura explained.
He added that the FRSC has continued to warn motorists against reckless driving, particularly on dangerous terrains.
“We advise drivers to avoid excessive speed, especially on sloping roads. Vehicles must be driven at a controllable speed to prevent crashes and unnecessary loss of lives and property,” he said.
The sector commander further urged motorists to inspect their vehicles properly before embarking on journeys, especially during the yuletide season, when road traffic usually increases.
