President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he almost pulled out of the 2023 presidential election due to mounting challenges and moments of doubt during the campaign.
Speaking at a special Iftar at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu recounted an encounter with a relative who questioned his chances of winning, citing the hardships caused by the naira redesign policy. According to the President, the relative visited him late at night, lamenting that even their affluent uncle struggled to access ₦10,000 in cash. He then questioned why Tinubu was still determined to run.
Despite the discouragement, Tinubu said he remained resolute. However, he later discovered that the messenger had kept a large portion of the money meant for their uncle, a revelation that left him momentarily disheartened. It was the encouragement of close allies, including former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari, that strengthened his resolve to push forward.
Reflecting on his time in office, Tinubu highlighted the difficult choices he had made, including the removal of the fuel subsidy on his inauguration day. He described leadership as the ability to make firm decisions despite criticism, emphasizing that his actions were taken in the country’s best interest.
Vice President Kashim Shettima commended Tinubu’s leadership, noting that he had taken decisive steps to address economic challenges such as subsidy fraud, forex instability, and local government autonomy—issues that previous administrations had avoided.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised Tinubu’s governance, describing him as a leader willing to take risks. He pointed out that under his administration, state governments were receiving increased allocations, which had helped stabilize state economies.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, acknowledged Tinubu’s role in mentoring leaders across different regions and fostering national unity, while Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma applauded the President’s bold decisions in preventing an economic crisis.
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, shared his experience of being appointed despite his history as an activist. He recalled a World Bank official recognizing Tinubu as one of Africa’s most reform-minded leaders, further affirming his influence on governance.
Tinubu’s longtime friend, Prof. Shaffideen Amuwo, reflected on their early years together and described the President’s journey to leadership as divinely guided. He expressed hope that Tinubu’s tenure would bring positive change and prayed for wisdom as he continues to lead the nation.
