President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died at the age of 90.
The President sent his condolences to the royal family, the people of Oyo State, and the entire Ibadanland, describing the late monarch as a respected leader who devoted his life to peace, knowledge, and community service.
Oba Olakulehin, born on July 5, 1935, in Okugbaja village near Akanran in Ibadan North East Local Government Area, followed the traditional succession process of Ibadanland, moving through the civil (Otun) and military (Balogun) lines.
He became Olubadan after the passing of Oba Moshood Lekan Balogun in March 2024.
Before ascending the throne, Oba Olakulehin was a scholar who taught at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.
He held a master’s degree in administration and economics and also pursued doctoral studies.
Known for his integrity and focus on national growth, he avoided praise-seeking roles and stood for principles.
President Tinubu recalled receiving an invitation to the monarch’s upcoming 90th birthday and coronation anniversary before news of his death broke.
He described the passing as a painful loss, not only to Ibadanland but to the entire country.
The President praised the late king’s wisdom and role in blending tradition with modern progress, stating that his influence brought stability and guidance to the Yoruba nation.
He prayed for the peaceful rest of Oba Olakulehin’s soul and encouraged Ibadan people to find comfort in the legacy he left behind.
