President Bola Tinubu has approved the full payment of allowances and match bonuses for the Super Falcons ahead of their much-anticipated final clash against Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, disclosed the development on Thursday while addressing journalists in Abuja.
According to Dikko, all entitlements due to the players, coaches, and officials of the women’s national football team—including those accruing up to the final scheduled for July 26—have been processed and disbursed for immediate payment.
He described the move as a demonstration of the Tinubu administration’s renewed commitment to sports development and athlete welfare.
“This is policy in motion,” Dikko stated. “What we are seeing is the birth of a new era where Nigerian athletes are treated with dignity, and where their sacrifices are promptly rewarded without drama or delay.”
He further revealed that the initiative extends to the country’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, who are gearing up for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
According to him, D’Tigress will also enjoy improved allowances and bonuses under the same policy direction, signaling a broader reform in Nigeria’s sports administration.
“This is the kind of sports administration we are building—one rooted in dignity, trust, and shared prosperity,” Dikko said. “Future generations will appreciate President Tinubu’s reforms in the sports sector.”
The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s most decorated women’s football team, will face hosts Morocco in the WAFCON final amid high hopes of clinching their 12th continental title.
Observers have praised the timely release of funds as a morale booster for the team, which has often faced delays in receiving entitlements in the past.
