Tensions rise as Fubara, Wike supporters clash at PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt

A violent confrontation erupted on Friday at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, between factions supporting Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The clash, which occurred at the secretariat along the Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway, led to sporadic gunfire.

Witnesses offered conflicting reports on the origin of the shots—some attributing them to security personnel stationed at the site following a court ruling that ousted the Aaron Chukwuemeka-led party leadership, while others claimed political thugs were responsible.

The violence stems from a long-standing rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor Wike, fueled by a struggle for political control in the state.

The altercation began when Fubara’s supporters, who had previously been removed from the party office following the court’s ruling, attempted to take back the building.

Their efforts were fiercely opposed by Wike’s loyalists, leading to a chaotic escalation of the situation.
