Suspected Vandal Electrocuted While Tampering With Transformer in Aba

A man suspected to be a vandal was electrocuted on Thursday while allegedly attempting to tamper with a power transformer along Ehi Road in Aba, Abia State.

The lifeless body of the unidentified individual was discovered at the base of the transformer, alongside a jackknife and a pair of pliers—items believed to have been used in an attempt to steal electrical components.

Residents of the area, who spoke to reporters, expressed concern over the recurring incidents of vandalism targeting power infrastructure in the city. Many recalled similar incidents in their neighborhoods, where the actions of vandals left entire communities without electricity for weeks.

While some residents viewed the electrocution as a consequence of criminal activity, others urged the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to determine the victim’s identity and the exact circumstances surrounding his death.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the matter was reported on Thursday, July 24, 2025, by one Mr. Okorie Agu of No. 132 Ehi Road, Aba, who was accompanied by two others.

“Preliminary reports indicate that an unknown male adult who allegedly attempted to vandalize a transformer was electrocuted at No. 132 Ehi Road,” DSP Chinaka said.

She added that police operatives were immediately dispatched to the scene, and Aba Power Limited was contacted to ensure safe handling of the affected installation before the body was evacuated.

The corpse was subsequently deposited at St. Anthony Hospital Mortuary in Aba, pending further investigation.

DSP Chinaka noted that an investigation is currently ongoing to uncover the full details of the incident, including the identity of the deceased and whether he acted alone or in collaboration with others.

Authorities have once again warned members of the public to desist from tampering with power installations, stressing that such actions not only endanger lives but also disrupt public utility services across communities.
