Tragedy struck in Kogi State as two teenage girls were brutally killed by suspected armed bandits in Okekwu village, near Ogbogbo in Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area.
The victims, identified as Ajuma Simon (17) and Omojo Shuaibu (18), were ambushed on Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. while returning from Ega market. The attack occurred along a bush path roughly two kilometres from their village.
An eyewitness, Yahaya Edibo, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, described the attack as horrifying. “Those who heard the girls’ screams rushed to help, but it was too late. By the time they reached them, the girls had been dismembered,” he said.
He added that one of the victims was still breathing when help arrived and managed to reveal that the assailants attempted to rape them before attacking with machetes. “They tried to run, but the men chased them down and butchered them beyond recognition,” Edibo said.
Community members and local security operatives retrieved the bodies early Thursday morning and deposited them at a morgue in Idah, Idah Local Government Area.
In response to the attack, the Kogi State Police Command has deployed security personnel to Okekwu village to prevent further unrest and ensure calm in the community.
The Igalamela chapter of Ukomu Igala, a socio-cultural organization, has condemned the killing, expressing deep concern over the rising insecurity in the area. The group called on the Kogi State Government to urgently strengthen security measures to protect lives and property.
The brutal killing of the two teenagers has left the community in mourning, sparking renewed calls for decisive action against banditry in Kogi State.
