The Armed Forces of Nigeria on Saturday confirmed the arrest of 16 officers over alleged indiscipline and breach of service regulations.
According to the military, preliminary investigations revealed that the grievances of the affected officers were linked to repeated failures in promotion examinations and frustration over career stagnation.
A statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said the conduct of the officers fell short of the standards expected in the Nigerian military.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that a routine military exercise has resulted in the arrest of sixteen officers over issues of indiscipline and breach of service regulations,” Gusau said.
He added, “Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues. Some of the apprehended officers had already been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial.”
The spokesman explained that those found guilty at the end of investigations would face military disciplinary processes in line with established procedures.
He stressed that the Armed Forces would not condone any behaviour that undermines its integrity or threatens its constitutional responsibilities under a democratic government.
“The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role.
These actions are strictly disciplinary in nature and part of routine efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks,” Gusau added.
Cases of disciplinary action are not new within the Nigerian military, as personnel in recent years have faced sanctions for offences ranging from mutiny to desertion.
