Stepmother arrested for allegedly brutalising 5-year-old over bedwetting

A housewife, Rabi Nuhu, has been arrested in Magama Gumau, Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, for allegedly inflicting severe burns on her five-year-old stepdaughter over bedwetting.

The victim, who lost her biological mother a year ago, had been living with her father, Mohammed Umar, and the suspect. Reports indicated that she had endured repeated violence for several days before the abuse came to light.

It was gathered that the child confided in her uncle after suffering continuous assaults, revealing that her stepmother had burned her private parts because she could not control her bedwetting. Her uncle thereafter reported the matter to the police.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Command, CSP Mohammed Wakil, disclosed that the case was reported on September 13, 2025, around 3:00 p.m.

He explained that the victim sustained burns on her lower abdomen, thighs, and buttocks.

Wakil further stated that the Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori Aliyu, had ordered the immediate arrest of the suspect and directed that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, for a thorough investigation.

The incident comes barely a week after another case in which a woman allegedly used a hot knife to mutilate her 10-year-old sister-in-law over accusations of witchcraft.
