Troops of Operation Hadin Kai stopped a surprise attack by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters on the Naval Base at the Lake Chad Fish Dam in the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident began around 2 a.m. when armed fighters tried to break into the base with the aim of destroying swamp-clearing vehicles recently bought by the Borno State Government.
These swamp bogeys were meant to help open up waterways in the area.
Soldiers at the base quickly engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted more than two hours.
They received support from other troops based in Baga.
Despite the heavy fighting, the attackers could not gain access to the equipment and were eventually forced to retreat.
During the operation, dozens of the fighters were killed, while materials used for making explosives were recovered.
Although the terrorists managed to cause some damage—burning an ambulance and two other vehicles—most of the area was secured. Some soldiers were injured during the clash.
The military has now deployed air units to follow up on the retreating fighters, searching the waterways to prevent any regrouping.
