The Sokoto State Government has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1st Muharram, 1447 AH.
This was announced in a statement by the Press Secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa. The holiday is intended to give Muslims across the state the opportunity to celebrate the start of the new Hijrah calendar year.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu, in a message to the public, urged residents to reflect spiritually and recommit themselves to personal and religious growth. He emphasized that the Islamic New Year should be a time for self-assessment, renewal of faith, and a deeper embrace of Islamic teachings.
“We should use the beginning of this new Islamic calendar year for sober reflection and self-assessment to recognise where we have done well and strive for improvement, and where we have fallen short, to make amends,” the governor stated.
Governor Aliyu also reaffirmed his administration’s support for religious activities and the promotion of Islamic values in Sokoto State. He wished the Muslim community a peaceful, prosperous, and spiritually fulfilling new year.
The holiday will be observed across the state, with Islamic clerics and organisations expected to hold special prayers and sermons to mark the occasion.
