Six killed, several injured as gunmen attack Benue community from Ebonyi

Tension has resurfaced between two border communities as armed assailants suspected to be from Effium in Ebonyi State launched a deadly attack on Ezza community in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving six people dead and many others wounded.

The violent incident, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, caught residents by surprise while they were going about their usual activities.

An eyewitness from the area, who asked not to be named, said the attackers arrived suddenly and began firing sporadically.

“It happened without warning. People were minding their business when these men came from the Effium side and started shooting,” the source said.

He described the attack as particularly devastating due to its timing during the Easter celebration.

“Families should be at home celebrating, but instead women and children are running for safety,” he added.

According to him, the assailants are still within the community, looting homes and destroying property.

The root of the conflict between both communities dates back several decades and has remained unresolved despite various intervention efforts.

Attempts to get a response from the state police spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, were not successful at the time this report was compiled.
