The Senate on Thursday, July 10, asked the Federal Government to name a national building or institution after the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Agunwa Anaekwe.
This request came during a plenary session in Abuja after the lawmakers adopted a motion presented by Senator Victor Umeh from Anambra Central. The motion, which drew support from lawmakers across different parties, focused on honouring Anaekwe’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.
Anaekwe, who was elected Speaker in 1992 at the age of 36, was remembered for his bold leadership during Nigeria’s brief Third Republic. Though his time in office was cut short by the military takeover in 1993, senators said his efforts helped protect the independence of the legislature.
The Senate also observed a minute of silence in his memory and agreed to send a team to console his family, the House of Representatives leadership, and the Anambra State Governor. The lawmakers further promised to support efforts to give the late leader a state burial.
Chief Anaekwe, a lawyer, businessman, and former member of the APC National Caucus, was born in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. Even after leaving public office, he remained active in politics and was known for promoting democratic values and mentoring younger politicians.
Lawmakers described him as a patriot who left a strong legacy in both governance and party politics.
