The Senate on Thursday asked President Bola Tinubu to support the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with funds to pay ₦200 million compensation to the family of Ivan Omhonrina, a two-year-old boy killed during an NDLEA operation in Asaba, Delta State.
The request was made during a Senate session in Abuja, after a report was presented by the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions. The report followed the tragic event that took place on July 13, 2023, when NDLEA officers carried out a drug raid at Abacha Junction, Okpanam, near Asaba. A stray bullet during the operation killed Ivan and seriously injured his younger brother, Eromonsele.
The lawmakers also demanded that the NDLEA continue to fund the full medical treatment of the injured boy, including care at a reputable hospital abroad. According to the Senate, the agency had earlier paid ₦25 million but cannot bear the full cost of treatment overseas or continue supporting the family at the needed level.
The Senate observed a minute of silence for the deceased child and described the incident as deeply sorrowful. Lawmakers were told that the child’s injured eye might not fully recover, as doctors are still unsure if he will regain his vision.
The Senate also asked the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to make sure the trial of the NDLEA officer who fired the fatal shot continues without delay. It was confirmed that the officer is already in court.
In addition, the Senate told its Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure that the resolutions are followed through and to give feedback within six weeks.
This appeal to the president comes at a time when there is growing concern about the way security operations are carried out in the country, with many calling for better handling of civilian safety and proper support for victims.
