The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of indiscipline, bribery, drug abuse, and misconduct among personnel of the agency, warning that such behaviours are eroding public trust and undermining the credibility of the Corps.
Mohammed stated this on Wednesday at the 2025 Half-Year Strategy Session of the Corps held in Abuja. The session, which brought together commanding officers from across the country, was themed “Driving Change from Within: Reinforcing Integrity, Accountability, and Performance.”
In his keynote address, the Corps Marshal disclosed that recent internal reports and public feedback had exposed a disturbing pattern of unethical conduct among some FRSC operatives during enforcement operations.
“Reports reveal that there are challenges in our enforcement operations due to patrol misconduct, rising cases of indiscipline, bribery and corruption, poor command oversight, absenteeism, drug abuse, and increasing incivility toward motorists,” Mohammed said.
He lamented that such actions not only weaken internal administrative control but also tarnish the image of the Corps and reduce its operational efficiency.
“These are major factors affecting our internal administrative control and negatively impacting our performance. It has also created deep concerns among Nigerians who have placed a high premium on our ability to deliver on our mandate,” he added.
Mohammed issued a stern warning to all commanding officers, urging them to take full responsibility for the conduct of their subordinates. He stressed that any further acts of misconduct would not be tolerated and that disciplinary action would be enforced against any personnel found culpable.
“Commanders must lead by example and ensure discipline is maintained at all levels. Leadership without accountability is a disservice to the Corps and the nation,” he stated.
He also addressed recent public outcry following a viral video showing some FRSC operatives allegedly collecting bribes from motorists. In response, he said the officers involved had been recalled, and a full-scale investigation was already underway.
“We must take such feedback seriously. We commend members of the public for their watchdog disposition. This partnership is vital for rooting out bad elements within our system,” he noted.
Mohammed reaffirmed his commitment to restoring the integrity of the FRSC through institutional reforms, ethical leadership, and rigorous internal supervision. He said part of the ongoing reform would include strengthening internal audit processes, enforcing strict disciplinary measures, and intensifying ethical training for field operatives.
The Corps Marshal concluded by reminding personnel of the FRSC’s core mandate — to ensure the safety of road users — and called on all officers to recommit themselves to upholding professionalism, accountability, and national service.
The Half-Year Strategy Session serves as a key performance review and planning forum for the Corps and is aimed at improving operational efficiency and aligning enforcement strategies with the agency’s core values.
