Senate Confirms Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan as INEC Chairman

The Senate has officially confirmed Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This decision followed a thorough three-hour screening session during which Senators rigorously questioned the nominee, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu. The confirmation process concluded without dissent, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio affirming that the approval reflected the consensus of the House.

During the screening, Amupitan addressed various inquiries, specifically clarifying that he was not a legal counsel for the All Progressives Congress during the 2023 Presidential Electoral Petition. He highlighted the availability of law reports for public review, emphasizing his commitment to transparency. Amupitan assured Senators that once in office, he would uphold the integrity of elections, encouraging a culture where losing candidates congratulate winners to foster national growth and development.

Amupitan also outlined his plans to enhance the electoral process, promising aggressive voter education and improved logistics to safeguard electoral materials. His commitment to ensuring that elections are conducted fairly was a central theme of his responses, resonating with the Senators who sought to understand his vision for the commission.

Prior to the confirmation, Amupitan received clearance from the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services, and the Inspector-General of Police, confirming that he has no criminal records. His appointment was initially proposed by President Bola Tinubu, who expressed hope for an expedited consideration by the Senate. Following the confirmation, Amupitan is expected to lead INEC in ensuring credible elections in Nigeria.
