The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has taken a swipe at the Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa-led administration over what it described as a “shameful charade” of Democracy Day celebrations, saying the state has nothing to celebrate under the current All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Oyeniyi Iwakun, lambasted the governor for allegedly celebrating what he called “failure, suffering and illegitimacy,” while accusing the government of abandoning the people to poverty, insecurity, and infrastructural collapse.
The party said, “The Social Democratic Party (SDP) condemns Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s Democracy Day celebrations as a charade that insults the suffering people of Ondo State. Instead of gathering at Akure to celebrate failure, this administration should hide in shame.”
According to the SDP, the APC administration has plunged the state into a deeper crisis since assuming power, with the situation deteriorating significantly under Aiyedatiwa’s leadership.
While rejecting the legitimacy of the government, Iwakun alleged that the November 16, 2024 governorship election that produced Aiyedatiwa was “bought through voter inducement,” describing the entire process as tainted.
He said, “Four months after swearing-in, the governor still lacks a full cabinet, exposing his contempt for democratic governance.”
The SDP further decried the state of social infrastructure, lamenting that public schools and health facilities have become “death traps,” while insecurity continues to escalate across all zones of the state.
The statement also accused the government of engaging in what it described as “empty flag-off ceremonies” without actual project execution, saying contracts are awarded to cronies without due process or public interest.
“Projects exist only as flag-off ceremonies with zero implementation. Contracts are inflated while three cronies make all decisions, ignoring the masses entirely. Poverty has skyrocketed, brain drain accelerated, and infrastructure collapsed completely,” the statement read.
The opposition party queried what the government was celebrating in the face of widespread hardship and economic stagnation, adding that the Democracy Day celebration amounted to an insult on the people’s intelligence.
“What exactly is this government celebrating? The destruction of Ondo State? The suffering of our people? This administration has delivered nothing but broken promises and cosmetic gestures while real problems fester.”
Calling on Governor Aiyedatiwa to face the realities of governance, the SDP said the Democracy Day should serve as a moment of sober reflection, not an avenue for propaganda and self-praise.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa must abandon this shameful celebration and face reality. Democracy Day demands honest reflection, not false triumphalism over failure. The people of Ondo State deserve leadership, not this pathetic charade masquerading as governance,” the statement concluded.
