The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to respond swiftly to the deadly attacks carried out by suspected herdsmen in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State. The call came after several communities, including Igbatoro Familugba and surrounding areas, suffered violent raids that left many people dead and others kidnapped.
Hon. Abiodun Derin Adesida raised the issue on the floor of the House on Tuesday, highlighting the severity of the violence, which has left the region in a state of fear. The attack began on March 1, 2025, when the armed assailants stormed the area, killing several locals and kidnapping a farmer. The victim was eventually released after his family paid a ₦1.2 million ransom.
The violence intensified on March 6, with more villages in Igbatoro Familugba, including Sunday and Alhajido camps, being targeted. Nine people were killed while they slept, and others were severely injured by machetes as they tried to flee. Homes were destroyed, and many people fled into nearby forests for safety, with some tragically unable to escape the violence.
The affected villages, which include Igbatoro Familugba, Ajegunle, Bolorunduro, and several others, are mainly agricultural communities known for large-scale food production. The ongoing attacks have caused widespread displacement, leaving families grieving and disrupting farming activities.
In response to the crisis, the House of Representatives directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief to the affected families. Hon. Adesida condemned the attackers’ actions, calling them a grave violation of human rights and the law.
