Reps Committee Makes U-turn, Passes Vote of Confidence in UBEC Boss

The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education has reversed its earlier stance and passed a vote of confidence in the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Aisha Garba Mohammed.

This development followed the committee’s legislative retreat held over the weekend in Lagos, which focused on the review of the UBEC Act. Contrary to earlier reports suggesting that the committee was investigating alleged infractions by the UBEC leadership, the lawmakers clarified that no such issue was raised during the retreat.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Mark Bako Useni, dismissed the rumours and affirmed the committee’s satisfaction with the performance of the UBEC boss.

“At no point during the retreat did the committee raise or deliberate on any allegations of mismanagement or administrative infractions against the Executive Secretary,” Useni stated.

He further commended Dr. Garba’s efforts in repositioning UBEC, particularly in areas of transparency, accountability, and improved collaboration with State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs).

The committee praised the Executive Secretary’s ongoing reforms in quality assurance, noting that her leadership aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda to transform the education sector.

The lawmakers emphasized that the retreat was strictly aimed at reviewing proposed amendments to the UBEC Act and strengthening basic education delivery in the country.

The vote of confidence is expected to boost morale at the commission and reinforce public trust in UBEC’s leadership under Dr. Aisha Garba Mohammed.
