Popular nollywood actress dies at 31

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular actress and body positivity advocate, Monalisa Stephen.

The news of her passing was confirmed on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, by Seun Oloketuyi, CEO of Best of Nollywood (BON), via a post on Facebook.

According to Oloketuyi, Monalisa died on Tuesday, May 13, in Lagos after reportedly battling complications from low blood sugar and internal bleeding. He added that the news was confirmed by the actress’s younger sister.

“Brand influencer Monalisa Ayobami Stephen is dead. She died yesterday in Lagos after losing the fight against low sugar and internal bleeding. Her immediate younger sister confirmed the death of this hardworking and beautiful soul,” his post read.

Monalisa Stephen was known not only for her roles in Nollywood films but also for her outspoken stance on body positivity and mental health awareness.

Her sudden death has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans, colleagues, and followers across social media.
