A violent altercation broke out between officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and officers at the Ekeki Police Division in Yenagoa during the attempted arrest of a suspected drug trafficker, causing widespread panic in the area.
According to reports, NDLEA operatives arrived at the police station to apprehend a woman suspected of being involved in drug trafficking. They had properly documented the arrest in police records before proceeding with the operation.
However, when the NDLEA team attempted to arrest the suspect, police officers from the Ekeki Division intervened, leading to a clash.
Witnesses reported that the situation rapidly escalated, with gunshots fired during the confrontation, sending local residents into a state of fear.
As a result, two NDLEA vehicles were damaged, with their tyres deflated from the gunfire, as police officers attempted to halt the arrest.
NDLEA spokesperson Howells Obah confirmed that the agency followed the correct procedures during the operation.
He added that the suspect was believed to be the wife of a police officer, which may have led to her receiving special protection. Obah also mentioned that police gunfire had damaged two NDLEA vehicles but reassured that steps were being taken to de-escalate the situation.
DSP Musa Mohammed, the Bayelsa Police Command’s public relations officer, acknowledged the incident and said he was on his way to the scene to investigate further.
“I am going there now to find out what happened,” he stated.
