The Ondo State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 10 suspects in connection with a violent robbery attack and an alleged assassination attempt on the traditional ruler of Igoba community, Oba Adinlewa John, in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on Thursday night when armed hoodlums stormed the community, dispossessing residents of valuables and leaving some injured. The assailants reportedly advanced to the palace, where they attempted to assassinate the monarch, who narrowly escaped unhurt.
Confirming the development on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, said the suspects were apprehended following a swift response by the command.
“The Ondo State Police Command wishes to inform the public of the arrest of 10 suspects in connection with a violent attack on the Igoba community at about 11:30 p.m.,” Ayanlade stated.
He explained that the hoodlums, armed with firearms, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons, attacked residents and also attempted to take the life of the monarch.
“Fortunately, Oba Adinlewa John narrowly escaped the life-threatening assault. On receiving the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, promptly mobilised tactical teams, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, which effected the arrest of 10 suspects,” the spokesman added.
According to him, the suspects confessed to their roles in the attack during preliminary investigations. Items recovered from them include two locally fabricated pistols, a single-barrel gun, live ammunition, assorted charms, knives, and machetes.
Ayanlade said the suspects would be charged in court at the conclusion of investigations.
