Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s alleged removal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, calling it an unconstitutional act that undermines democracy and the rule of law.
Obi argued that the decision has thrown Nigeria into a state of lawlessness, reversing 26 years of democratic progress.
“The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State is not only reckless but also a calculated attempt to consolidate power at all costs,” he said.
He described the move as a backdoor approach to martial rule, stating that it misinterprets Section 305(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
“A state of emergency does not grant the president the authority to unilaterally remove an elected governor. This decision contradicts democratic principles and good governance,” Obi emphasized.
He called on the National Assembly and other democratic institutions to reject the move, warning that allowing such actions could set a dangerous precedent and encourage a culture of impunity in Nigeria.
Obi concluded with a call for vigilance, reaffirming his belief that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
