The Labour Party (LP) has announced that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, will spearhead the party’s governorship campaign in Akure, Ondo State.
This includes the involvement of elected lawmakers and influential members of the Obidient Movement.
In a statement issued by LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, and Chairman of LP governorship primaries in Ondo, Olusola Ayodele, the party emphasized its readiness to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the November 16 governorship election.
Their candidate, Dr. Ayodele Olorunfemi, was chosen unopposed in the primaries held on April 27.
Olorunfemi, a well-known unionist and former General Secretary of the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies, was endorsed as the LP candidate.
Addressing party leaders in Ibadan, Ayodele mentioned that a task force has been established to accelerate campaign activities, aiming to replicate the success of former Governor Olusegun Mimiko in 2013.
The campaign committee, led by Peter Obi and Alex Otti, will be supported by LP senators, representatives, state lawmakers, and key party leaders, with significant backing from the Obidient Movement.
Although the exact date for the campaign’s launch remains undisclosed, there are speculations that the current candidate, Olorunfemi, might be replaced by a stronger candidate before the election.
Ayodele dismissed these rumors, stating that any changes would require Olorunfemi’s withdrawal and the approval of the National Working Committee.
Additionally, Ayodele confirmed that discussions are ongoing with discontented aspirants from the APC and PDP considering a switch to the Labour Party.
