Miss Oluwafunmilayo Oluwaseun, who held the symbolic position of Vice-Chancellor at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) for a day, has expressed strong appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s student loan programme, describing it as a vital support system for underprivileged students across the country.
Oluwaseun, a 23-year-old final-year student in Criminology and Security Studies, said the initiative has made higher education more accessible for students in public institutions who may not have the financial means to continue their studies.
During a press briefing held to commemorate her brief tenure as the university’s ceremonial VC on Tuesday, she stated, “President Tinubu’s student loan programme is a remarkable intervention that has positively impacted countless students. It is truly appreciated.”
She emerged as the winner of the university’s inaugural One-Day VC competition, an initiative spearheaded by the programme coordinator, Professor Adebola Aderibigbe.
Inspired by her experience, Oluwaseun encouraged the federal government to replicate such youth engagement programmes at the national level.
She suggested the creation of a “One-Day President” initiative to allow young Nigerians to connect with national leadership — an idea modeled after the “One-Day Governor” scheme previously introduced in Lagos State.
“I urge President Tinubu to consider launching a One-Day President programme.
It would serve as a valuable platform for young people to share their ideas and concerns directly with national leaders,” she said.
Speaking further, she highlighted key issues facing students, including unreliable internet connectivity, economic hardship, and mental health struggles.
She noted that the university had begun working on solutions, such as submitting requests for mobile network mast installations and rolling out a mental health awareness campaign through the university’s health and counseling units.
To ease the economic burden on students, she announced a proposed on-campus market that would provide essential goods at affordable prices, promote student businesses, and create job opportunities within the school environment.
She also unveiled a student-led digital initiative named FUOYE 360, developed by fellow student Mosopefoluwa Sanyaolu.
The platform offers past examination questions to help students prepare for assessments and reduce stress.
Oluwaseun called on the university authorities to support the platform and help scale its reach.
