Peter Obi has urged the Nigerian government to take immediate action against security officers said to be working with Boko Haram insurgents.
His call followed a claim by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, who said that some high-ranking military officers are feeding information to the terrorist group.
Obi said the matter should not be ignored and must be seen as a betrayal of the country.
Speaking through a statement on Thursday, the former Labour Party presidential candidate expressed deep concern over the situation.
He said that any officer or politician who helps terrorists in any way has turned against the country and must not be spared.
According to him, such people are part of the reason Nigeria’s fight against terrorism has not succeeded after many years.
Obi also warned that no real progress can be made in ending insurgency if those who are supposed to protect citizens are secretly working against them.
He said the recent information shared by Governor Zulum confirms what many Nigerians have feared for a long time — that the country’s security problems are not just caused by outsiders but by some people within the system.
He commended Zulum for speaking boldly and said the government must not stay silent or treat the matter lightly.
He insisted that anyone found guilty must be brought to justice, no matter their rank or position.
Obi stressed that Nigeria cannot move forward if those in charge of protecting the nation are the same ones helping its enemies.
He added that Nigerians deserve clear answers and quick action, not just statements.
Obi called on the federal government to begin a proper investigation and make sure those responsible are held accountable.
He said this is the only way to bring back trust in the country’s fight against terrorism.
