A member of the House of Representatives from Ondo State, Hon. Donald Ojogo, has fired back at former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, over his recent condemnation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid amidst ongoing national challenges.
Malami had, during a meeting of the National Political Consultative Group (North) in Abuja, criticised the APC’s focus on 2027 politics instead of addressing the country’s pressing issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and poverty.
The gathering was attended by prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Responding through a statement issued on Monday, Ojogo described Malami’s comments as both deceptive and ironic, questioning the former AGF’s credibility based on his track record in office.
“I’m not speaking for the Presidency or as a party spokesman, but Malami’s remarks cannot go unchallenged,” Ojogo said.
“It is the height of hypocrisy for him to take such a moral high ground, considering the controversy and resistance he was known for during the Buhari era.”
The federal lawmaker recalled Malami’s resistance to regional security efforts during his time as Attorney General, particularly the formation of the Amotekun Corps by South-West states to address insecurity.
Ojogo, who served as Commissioner for Information in Ondo State under the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, accused Malami of working against initiatives aimed at safeguarding lives in the region.
“When the South-West faced serious security threats, Malami did everything possible to derail the Amotekun initiative,” he said. “He used his position to try and frustrate every legitimate effort by Southern governors to protect their people.”
Ojogo added that without the determination of Akeredolu and other Southern leaders who went ahead with Amotekun despite federal resistance, the security situation in the region could have deteriorated further.
He also took aim at Malami’s past opposition to state policing and accused him of lacking a genuine commitment to federalism.
“His actions then reveal a man who stood in the way of progress when leadership and courage were needed most,” he noted.
Ojogo ended his statement by dismissing Malami’s latest remarks as a calculated move to clean up a questionable political record, saying, “This is nothing more than an attempt to rewrite a stained legacy.”
