Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State have firmly denied any alliance or coalition with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing recent reports suggesting such a merger as false, misleading, and a calculated attempt to destabilize the PDP’s structure ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
The clarification came following widespread rumours in the media that some PDP chieftains were holding talks with the ADC over a possible merger to present a united opposition front. The speculation gained traction after some individuals who were previously associated with the PDP were seen at recent ADC meetings.
In a jointly signed statement by key stakeholders of the party in the state, the PDP dismissed the rumours and reaffirmed its commitment to contest the November 2025 governorship election independently and with a clear vision.
The statement was signed by the State Caretaker Committee Chairman, Hon. Bakkita Bello, and co-signed by former Deputy Governor and 2024 PDP governorship candidate, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, alongside other party leaders including Senator Bode Olajumoke, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, former State Chairman Clement Faboyede, Olajide Oguntodu, Ladi Omotehinse, and Oluseye Olujimi.
According to the statement, “The attention of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has been drawn to false claims and insinuations making the rounds that our party has entered into a coalition or merger with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or any other political party. We wish to state categorically that this information is unfounded and lacks any iota of truth.”
The party leaders noted that while some former members of the PDP might have chosen to align with other political platforms, their actions do not reflect the official position of the party. “Let it be known that those individuals who have moved or aligned with the ADC did so in their personal capacity. The PDP remains intact, united and committed to delivering a credible alternative to the people of Ondo State in the coming governorship election,” the statement added.
They reaffirmed the party’s strength, saying, “The PDP structure is alive and well in all the 203 wards and 18 local government areas of Ondo State. Our focus remains on rebuilding and repositioning the state through purposeful leadership. Any insinuation of collapse or compromise is the handiwork of political detractors.”
While appealing to party faithful not to be distracted by the propaganda, the PDP leaders urged their members to remain resolute and focused, assuring that the party is fully prepared for the November governorship polls. They further reiterated the party’s commitment to internal democracy, unity, and credible leadership, calling on those who have been misled by the coalition narrative to “rethink and retrace their steps.”
“This party is not just a platform for elections. It is a movement committed to the ideals of democracy, development and justice. We are fully focused on our mission to rescue and reposition Ondo State for the good of all residents,” the statement concluded.
The clarification is coming at a time when political parties in the state are realigning ahead of the off-cycle governorship election. However, the PDP leadership has vowed not to be distracted and will continue to engage its members and the electorate as it strategizes for electoral victory.
